Located in the heart of Philadelphia’s University City, Abyssinia offers a delightful journey into authentic Ethiopian cuisine, making it a must-visit for anyone eager to explore bold, flavorful African dishes. Nestled at 229 S 45th St, this cozy yet unpretentious spot brings an invigorating blend of rich spices, tender meats, and vibrant vegetarian options to the table, all served with the warmth of Ethiopian hospitality.
Stepping inside Abyssinia, you’ll immediately sense a welcoming atmosphere where simplicity meets sincerity. The décor may be modest, but it’s the genuine care and passion infused into every dish that truly shines here. Diners often remark on how the friendly staff and the lovingly crafted fare create an experience that feels both comforting and exciting.
If you are new to Ethiopian flavors or a seasoned fan, Abyssinia’s menu is thoughtfully curated to satisfy diverse palates. Their Injera Platter—a signature sourdough flatbread companion—is the canvas upon which a delicious array of stews and sautéed offerings come alive. From the spicy, succulent Doro Wot (a traditional chicken stew rich with berbere spices and slow-cooked onions) to the markedly tender Beef Tibs and Tibs Firfir (injera pieces braised in a zesty meat sauté), every bite bursts with fresh, carefully balanced flavors.
Vegetarians will find a bounty of vibrant choices like the Vegetarian Combination, which includes wholesome lentils and vegetable curries seasoned delicately but distinctively. Appetizers such as the Veggie Samosa and the intriguingly textured Azifah Fitfit (lentil bits mixed with injera and spices) showcase the layered textures and tastes that Ethiopian cuisine celebrates. And for those with a sweet tooth, the Baklava Sweet offers a flaky, nut-studded treat that—while some diners wish for a heartier portion—is a delightful finish to the meal.
Beverages at Abyssinia span from traditional شاي (Ethiopian tea) and luscious mango juice to robust espresso and cappuccino, ensuring that every sip complements the meal. For those who enjoy beer, the menu includes tantalizing selections like Tusker Beer, Czech Beer, and the crisp Matsurika Czech Bohemian Pilsner, which provide refreshing counterpoints to the spicy dishes.
Customer feedback paints a vivid picture of the Abyssinia experience. Carlos Jaramillo praises the restaurant for its "high-quality, flavorful, and beautifully presented" offerings, emphasizing how the freshness of each bite is unmistakable. Felder Fogle describes Abyssinia as a superb introduction to Ethiopian food, highlighting the "fresh and healthy" curries and the calming spiced tea that begins the meal perfectly. For groups, Abyssinia's generous platter portions, as noted by Sheyla Isaula-Reyes, provide a social and satisfying dining experience that leaves guests happily full without stretching the budget.
While some guests, like Mark Midmark, find certain elements such as the injera texture not quite to their liking or note the restaurant’s aged interior, the overall consensus leans strongly in favor of Abyssinia’s authentic flavors and attentive service. First-timers, in particular, rave about the tender meats and well-seasoned fare that awaken the palate and invite return visits.
Ultimately, Abyssinia is more than just a meal—it’s an invitation to savor centuries-old Ethiopian culinary traditions in a setting where every dish tells a story. Whether you’re seeking an introduction to this vibrant cuisine, a casual night out with friends, or a comforting vegetarian feast, Abyssinia provides an enduringly memorable experience that celebrates the heart of Ethiopian cooking.
Abyssinia is a wonderful find. The food is high quality, flavorful, and beautifully presented — you can taste the care and freshness in every bite. The décor is simple, but the warmth of the staff and the excellence of the cuisine more than make up for it. A relaxed, welcoming spot that delivers authentic Ethiopian flavors and great value. Definitely worth a visit.
I don't drink anymore, but I love the quirkiness of this restaurant/bar building and if I did drink still, this place would be a really awesome stop. Solely based on the food, it's decent. The injera was too dry and thin for me, but everything tasted good. Service was good, but the place is really worn down. I probably won't come back, mostly because the food was just so so.
10/10 food. First time trying Ethiopian after wanting to for awhile and Abyssinia was a great intro. I started with the spiced tea and then had the veggie combo all curries were good and tasted fresh and healthy. Will be coming back.
Last Friday, I went to Abyssinia and I LOVED IT. My 4 friends and I ordered 6 entrees (3 non vegetarian & 3 vegetarian) on a platter. We had the best social time finishing the HUGE platter; the portions are insanely good! All of us 5 were full by the end. However, I cannot emphasize how delicious every single bite was. The meat was so tender!! I will be back!! And prices were relatively good too for what you get!
I got Meat Combo and the Kurt Tibs and the meat was so tender and seasoned well (the veggies were seasoned well too). It was the first time me and my friends tried Ethiopian food and we can't wait to have it again! I just wish the Baklava was bigger for the price it is. We spent a total of ~$80 for 2 meat combos one order of Kurt Tibs and 2 orders of the baklava. There was definitely more than enough to share with 4 people.
Went with a group of friends. What a great place. Service was good. The server was very friendly and helpful with any questions we had. Food was delivered quickly and fresh. And very flavorful. Everything was outstanding. Highly recommend trying it out.
